ABOUT US
Ka Pā Hula Hawaiʻi, founded in 1973 in Nuʻuanu and now practicing in Kūkuluaeʻo (Ward Village), O’ahu, is dedicated to practicing the traditional Hawaiian art of dance, ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i, and the preservation of Hawaiian cultural knowledge.
The hālau practices under the direction of Loea Hula John R. Kahaʻi Topolinski, who has committed over five decades of research, advisory, and teaching of Hawaiian history and traditions. His work is reflected through multiple publications, performances, productions, and lessons as an educator, lecturer, historian, composer, master featherwork practitioner, and advocate for the perpetuation of traditional Hawaiian culture.
In the hula context, Loea Hula Kahaʻi completed his ‘ūniki (elevation) with Hālau Hula O Maiki under the direction of Hula Master Maiki Aiu Lake and received his title as Kumu Hula. He has also studied under Hula Master Mary Kawena Puku’i, her daughters Pat Namaka Bacon and Pele Pukui Suganuma, Henry Pā, and many other notable hula practitioners.
Loea Hula Kahaʻi is supported by nā Kumu Hula Harry Ka’u, Dr. Ikaika Bantolina, Kau’i Maikui, and Rachele Gomes – all who volunteer their time, skill, and knowledge teaching new and returning haumāna Ka Pā Hula Hawaiʻi traditions.
